Ms. Mithila Dalvi’s workshop on ‘Learning Styles and English’

Ms. Mithila Dalvi,
Educational Consultant

Date / Time – 9th April, 2018 between 8.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m.

Attendees – Teachers from English Secondary,
English Primary and Balodyan

Ms. Dalvi literally burst into Bhai Surve hall with an enthusiastic ‘Good morning’ at ten to eight and started setting up her laptop and ppt., telling us all the time to give her five minutes. Everyone relaxed. This was the first lesson: Give students time to chat, to relax and settle down. Ms. Dalvi was introduced by Ms. Honkote.
At the outset, Ms. Dalvi checked the retention and recall capacity of the teachers and made them realise what aspects are easier to remember. She told them to vary their tone of speech in a way that all become attentive and can decipher what is read or told. Avoid long, complicated sentences, she said.
“Boys need several hours of free play to release their testosterone, their excess energy so please do not take away P.T. periods to teach other subjects,” Ms. Dalvi pleaded, “The more they play, the more they can concentrate on studies.” Madam went into the details of the topic for the day.
Depending on the way we comprehend data, we have 3 learning styles - Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. In order to make learning more effective it is important that teachers learn to identify the different learning styles. A questionnaire was given to all the participants to help them identify their own learning style. A simple game was also played so as to identify behaviour of individuals belonging to different styles. With the help of an audio clip, a shadow play and several slides madam sensitized the teachers towards the different learning styles.
Auditory – These people talk a lot, they prefer listening to instructions, have good vocabulary, like songs, music and meeting people. The present teaching style is largely auditory but only 30% of people are auditory. Thus teaching-learning is not effective enough and doesn’t cater to all the students. To increase auditory skills, one needs to move around with friends and relatives, participate in group or creative activities.
Visual -  These individuals are very comfortable with forms, instruction manuals and written matter. They need to see to understand. Their imagination is good. They can be very disciplined, precise and organised. They don’t like a barrage of words, in fact they are not very friendly and prefer to be aloof. Being introverts, they love to work alone and have issues with social skills. They form pictures in their mind so they need more visual inputs in order to comprehend. Teachers need to provide a plethora of visual experiences to students as 65% of individuals are visually inclined. Use flash cards, charts and other visual aids to facilitate learning. Visual people can control their emotions. They think a lot so they are good at mental work, thus games such as chess, carrom and cricket wherein you need to plan strategies are preferred. Encourage students to put together a jigsaw puzzle, to build with blocks and to study maps.
Kinesthetic – These children rely on touch and even sometimes smell. They need action and movement thus they move around a lot. Physical activities, constant change in situations and variety appeal to them. Their facial expressions change easily so they are fond of acting, dancing, singing, fancy dress and role play. Adventure stories appeal to them. A magic kit would do wonders. Kinesthetic people find it difficult to focus for long, to construct sentences and to find appropriate words. They get distracted easily and become aggressive quickly. They dare to dive into situations without thinking too much therefore they can be the best firefighters or commandos. They love animals. 5% of individuals are kinesthetic. Educators need to play games, introduce skipping, juggling, swimming, skating, playing drums, tabla, dhol or similar activities as they would be exciting.
Why do educators need to know learning styles?
-         To increase learning capacity
-         To overcome hurdles in class
-         To expand horizons of comprehension
-         To increase self confidence and belief in students
-         To teach in a way that suits maximum students
-         To improve the approach to examinations
-         To change yourself consciously and meet the greater goal
-         To improve communication
-         To become more accommodative

Points to remember
Never label children
Understand emotional intelligence
Bring in variation
There is fun in mental activities
Kinesthetic children need more acceptance
Learning styles can consciously be changed
Don’t pounce on children, Give them time

Ms. Dalvi’s effectiveness lay in her deep knowledge about the topic, her style of speaking, her delivery, her expressions and the citing of real life examples from drawn from a wealth of experience. The teachers were very impressed. Hope it has a lasting impact on all.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 What are language games?
Language games are designed to make the teaching-learning process easier. It can be the best tool for the teacher. Teaching-learning process can be done in a relaxed atmosphere. The teachers’ dynamic teaching method can help her create an overwhelming response in the class. Thus, the English language teachers can value games to sustain fluency of the subject.

What 'Women's day' means to me?

Mrs. Shweta Vartak
English Secondary Section
It's 8th March today. In the morning I received a message wishing me  'Happy Women's day'. My first thought - Wow, its my day, I'm proud to be a woman. Throughout the day I was receiving the same type of messages, in different words but all were praising women power, her courage, her abilities and her outstanding multitasking quality. I felt really pleased to receive such comments and praise from the people, men and women too. But, is really a specific day needed to praise and honour women ?
Today's women are not only taking care of their house as dictated by ancient culture, but they are also standing beside men and shouldering their responsibilities in all fields. At the same time, a woman is performing different roles in her life, such as a mother, daughter, wife, sister, daughter-in-law etc. She not only takes full  responsibility of her family but also works towards developing the society. As a homemaker, she follows various duties like being a  teacher to her children, a cook in the kitchen making Tiffin for her family, a financial planner managing the household expenses etc. She does all these tasks without expecting a word of encouragement.
As per my opinion, Women's day should not be limited to one day when everybody applauds women, and the other 364 days of the year they treat a women like an inferior part of the family and society. Being a woman, I would like to say that if someone really wants to appreciate women, they should not wait for a so called 'Women's day'. Respecting her and taking note of her opinion should become a part and parcel of our psyche. So long as women are abused and looked upon as objects of desire, celebration of Women's Day will only be a farce, lacking in any intrinsic value. A woman of calibre does not expect anything from anybody and so she feels astonished on receiving a word of appreciation from the person she loves or cares for. She is so strong and complete in herself that she is an inspiration for the rest.
According to me, Women's day should  be the day when all the ladies will feel secure in this world. The women should be able to live freely and follow their dreams without obstacles.

Common mistakes made in life

Parth Nirhali - VI A
In day to day life of the people, they make a lot of mistakes. Such mistakes should be avoided for their health and convenience also. Some myths are also followed by them. Today I will share some of the wrong practices that people usually follow.
1. Wearing a bag-
People usually wear a bag on their back, facing the back. This is not the way to wear a bag. If people continue wearing a bag like this they will have to face problems like back ache and their height will also decrease . The reason behind this is that wearing a bag facing the back puts force on the vertebral column which can be a cause for your back ache or problem of shortage of your height. I have a simple solution to these problems.  The solution is that – you should wear your bag on the front, facing your front side . This will reduce the stress on the back and also not lead to shortage of height.
 2. The right way of sleeping-
Mostly people sleep straight on their back or sleep on the right side of their body. Unfortunately these are not the ways of sleeping because usually people sleep after eating some food at night. The process of digestion takes four hours to complete. So sleeping directly after eating is wrong. You should at least have a walk for half an hour after food. Still some of you may not have time for this so I have a tip for you. Digestion occurs even while sleeping. For this you should know the right way or posture to sleep. The right posture to sleep is to sleep on the left side of your body. The scientific reason behind this is that when you sleep on the left side of your body digestion can take place. This is because the front side of your body does not contain your stomach; it is only your fats. The stomach is present on the left side of your body. Sleeping on the left side also helps in removing bad toxins of your body. Sleeping on left side is also beneficial for blood circulation as our heart is present on our left side. Thus keeping our heart in its natural position while sleeping helps in blood circulation.

3. The right way of breathing-
Breathing is the most important process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. Everyone knows to breathe but the right way to breathe is not known. When  people breathe, their chest moves  up and down. You should learn the proper way of breathing by observing a baby. While the baby breathes his/her stomach moves up and down as the air reaches every part of the lungs. The diaphragm moves up and down. More impure air is thrown out. This is the right way of breathing. When we take deep breaths and our stomach goes in and out, we get more oxygen. By breathing through this method, the oxygen also reaches our brain. This also makes our brain happy. This method helps to reduce heart problems. Cortisol, a hormone, that makes us feel stressed  gets destroyed by breathing diaphragmatically. These are the benefits of deep breathing so all of us should consciously adopt this technique.
4. The duration of brushing-
When you wake up in the morning the first thing you do is, you brush your teeth. Some of you think of completing brushing quickly and hurry towards your next daily rituals, but if you brush only for a few seconds it is useless. Dentists speculate that your tooth paste takes at least two minutes for completing its work. Science says if you brush regularly for two minutes, you will have no problems related to your teeth. So the right duration of brushing is two minutes.
5. Some myths about catching cold-
Whenever you catch cold, your mother stops you from drinking cold water and wetting your hair. You refuse to eat ice-cream when you have cough and cold but all the above things are myths. The reality is that they have no connection to cold and cough. Cough and cold are simply some viral diseases. When someone sneezes or coughs on you, you catch the disease. You must have seen that your parents stop you from drinking cold water or eating your favourite ice-cream   but all these things are myths. So now you have understood that cough and cold are viral diseases. So you must follow the above tips and avoid the above myths.

ANNUAL GATHERING OF OUR SCHOOL

Mandar Prabhu - VI A
Our school is very special as it provides an opportunity to every student to showcase their skills. It organises separate cultural programmes for every section. Today I am going to write on the Annual gathering of VPM's Vidya Mandir, English Secondary section. As always, it was a grand success.
Every standard was given a theme by our HM, Mrs Tharval. The theme for standard VI A was 'BOOK' and the theme of VI B was 'HAT'. There was a good selection of songs for dance and attractive dance steps. The days of practice were very exciting. The choreographer who was teaching was very friendly with us. A funny incident that happened was that Shubham`s leg got crossed and he fell on the floor in a comical manner. We all laughed very loudly. Fortunately, he was not hurt. There was a step which was very difficult and only the choreographer could do it. At last he changed the step. When the dance got set , we thanked the choreographer for setting the dance so quickly and skillfully.
The final day, on 21st of December, was a grand success. There were a few skits and many dances.
Everybody loved and enjoyed the dance Mahishasuravadani. Everybody had performed well. Everybody- the students, teachers, parents and other staff members had put in all their efforts to make this programme a grand success. The programme concluded with the singing of VANDE MATARAM.

HOBBIES

 Aayush Ghatgar – VI B

Having a hobby is very important in today's stressful life. Hobbies are the greatest stress busters. They give us a chance to relax ourselves. Hobby is not just a time pass activity but it adds value to our time which helps us to understand the importance of time in our life. Having a hobby can help our social life and create a bond with others. A hobby leads us to enhance our power to concentrate and develop our interpersonal skills.
A hobby can be converted into passion. Passion is the next step of hobby. But there is a difference between hobby and passion. Hobby is what you like to do and passion is what you love to do. Hobby is what you do in your free time and passion is what you do even if you don’t have free time. The desire for pursuing the passion is much stronger.  When one is passionate about something, one continuously wants to improve his skills.
I too have a hobby in the field of music.  My hobby is playing the Tabla. I have been learning Tabla for the last five years. Recently I gave Praveshika Poorna, the third exam in Tabla and got distinction in it.  From the age of 3 years only, I began to show my liking for Tabla.  At the age of six, my Tabla education started under the guidance of Ashish Mahajan Sir but there I couldn’t give any Tabla exam.  So after three years, I went to Siddhesh Kamat Sir who developed my Tabla playing skills and prepared me for competition within two years.  I got first runner up prize in the competition held by Sri Guruji Art Academy which is my first ever achievement in Tabla. I know that this is just a beginning and I have a long way to go but this experience helped me to understand the importance of this hobby in my life. I learnt the value of discipline too.  My guru explained the importance of daily ‘Riyaz’. He also takes me for a 3 day workshop to a place which is away from noise and air pollution of the city. This also gives me an opportunity to practice with other sincere and senior students and get guidance from Tabla maestros.
But the most important thing is I get relaxed from the daily stressful routine. I enjoy playing Tabla. It has helped me in my studies also.  I have increased my concentration ability to a great extent. As we have to memorise Tabla notes, it has helped me to improve my memory. Recitation of difficult notes developed my pronunciation.   Above all my hobby helped me to overcome stage fear and to gain confidence.

SPEECH – Science Day

Vinay Vaidya - IX/C

Good morning teachers and my dear friends.
I am Vinay Vaidya from Std. IX/C. Today I am going to speak a few words on the wonderful occasion of ‘Science day'.
But first, I would like to ask you, What is Science?
Let me tell you that Science is an intellectual & practical activity encompassing systematic study of a structure & behaviour of physical and natural world through observation & experiment. If I am not mistaken, science is the most favourite subject for most of us. So you might be aware that 28th February is celebrated as National Science day, so we all are here to celebrate this day . Don’t you think we should know why we are celebrating this day with great enthusiasm? It's because, on this day in 1928 the great Indian scientist Dr C.V. Raman discovered the phenomenon of scattering photons which was later named as Raman effect. C.V Raman got the Nobel Prize for his remarkable discovery.
This was the first Nobel prize that India got in the field of science so let me tell you all what is Raman effect in short, as we all must be aware of this. Raman effect is the change in the wavelength of the light that occurs when the light beam is deflected by  molecules. Dr C.V. Raman got knight bachelor award in 1929 and Hughes medal in 1930. He also got the Bharat Ratna in 1954. Science Day is celebrated to give an opportunity to scientific minded citizens in the country to showcase their new inventions and discoveries and spread the message about the use of scientific applications in daily life of the people . India has had great scientists like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr. Homi Bhabha, Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar, Vikram Sarabhai, & Shrinivasa Ramanujan who greatly contributed to the field of Science . Finally I  conclude saying, let us put the knowledge of science into application by planting more and more saplings, taking care of them so that we can reduce pollution and live a healthy & happy life.
Wish you all happy Science day .
               🍁 Thank you.🍁

Sports day - An integral part of School Life

Aditi Nitin Bane   - Aditi N. Bane – X A

‘Sports’- the word itself encourages and energizes us! Our School, VPM’s Vidya Mandir has always valued the role of sports in the progress of its students. Our physical fitness teachers Mr. Shirke, Mrs. Neha and all other teachers make sure that all the students are active in sports and in other extracurricular activities. Our school recently hosted its Annual Sports Meet 2017-18 with more than two hundred students participating in it. The event took place on the school ground on 30th November and 2nd December, 2017.

All the participating studentsand the teachers assembled on the school ground at 7:00 a.m.The students were very excited and eagerly waiting for the sports events to start. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Mhambrey, a football enthusiast and a champion in his college days and true lover of sports. Some of the other notables who attended the event with him were our Headmistress, Mrs. Tharval and our school committee member Mrs. Sonali Joshi.

The programme started with a welcome song. Then the honourable Chief Guest hoisted the Olympic flag and the National Anthem was sung. Thereupon, the teachers proudly announced the names of the students who had shown excellent performances in sports in interschool, district, state and national level championships. The sportsman’s oath was taken by Ms.Aditi Bane, who had represented the school in interschool Kho-Kho matches. This was followed by the ‘Lighting of the Torch’ ceremony. The torch was proudly carried all around the ground in the form of a relay by the athletes who had represented the school in variousevents. The Chief Guest gave an inspiring speech wherein he spoke about the dedication of stalwarts such as Sachin Tendulkar and Sakshi Malik. He called upon the participants to play in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The first sports event, 50 metres running under-12 boys, was started off by the whistle blown by Mr. Mhambrey. On the first day of sports, i.e. on 30th November, 2017 only individual sports events such as 50m. running, 100 m. running, 200m. running, shot put, long jump etc. were conducted. On 2nd December, 2017, the second day of sports, group events, namely Langadi matches for V and VI and Kho-Kho matches for Std. VII to X, division wise, were held. This ensured maximum participation of students. Several others had come to cheer for their friends. The final rounds of these matches were immensely thrilling and the winners were able to claim the trophy after a nail-biting finish.

At the end of all the exciting events, awards, that is, medals for individual events and trophies for team events, were distributed to the winners. AHM, Tharval madam proclaimed that all the participants were winners as they had played a fair game. The Vote of thanks was given by Neha miss. The Sports Meet concluded with the lowering of the Olympic flag. Everyone had had a great time! The winners went home proudly and the others went with a resolve to do better next time.

These two days will remain in the minds of students forever..!!

Your dream career

- by Akash D. Parab – X B
Doctors, Engineers, CAs, ……we have so many of them around us. And we students are often told, ‘Study well so that you become an engineer or doctor’. We grow up to believe that all careers start and end in medical and engineering. So you have around you many ‘future’ doctors and engineers. However what if I say that some ‘new and different careers exist’? Disk Jockey (DJ), Radio Jockey (RJ), Stand Up Comedian, youtuber (earning money through one’s own youtube channel), blogger (writing and developing content on the internet), vlogger (traveling to different places and giving information of that place by creating video and uploading it on social media), digital media buyer (buying bulk advertising space for clients on social media platforms and websites for advertising purposes), landscape designer (designing landscape gardens for huge housing projects and companies), sommelier (wine taster), food writer, travel writer, sports nutritionist, app developer …. The list is endless.
I am sure many of us are not aware of these careers. We all have somehow not searched for career options beyond engineering, CA and medical. Many people stumble upon such ‘different career options’ when they fail to find job satisfaction in their regular engineering or medical or commerce related careers. When you are passionate about something and really love doing it from your heart, you end up taking your passion as your means of earning money.I am sure many of you have seen the movie ‘3 Idiots’. We saw in the movie that one of the character wants to be a wild life photographer but is toldby his parents to become an engineer and hence takes admission in an engineering college. Finally he finds that if he does not pursue what he likes (wild life photography), he may become an engineer but a bad one not the best one. He thought instead; why not follow my heart and be the world’s best wild life photographer? My father gave me a similar example. He is in advertising. He knows people who are good at writing ads (called copywriters) and who were science graduates or engineers or CAs or researchers but loved writing. Ultimately they switched careers to become successful copywriters. We find many such people around us. People who give up well paying jobs to take jobs with work they love doing. Those who suppress their passions remain in jobs they don’t like and face dissatisfaction and stress in their jobs. So you may often come across a well educated person struggling in his career and a comparatively less educated person doing well in his chosen field. I am not suggesting at all that we should not take degrees or not become engineers and doctors. But it is important to ask ourselves whether we would love be an engineer, a doctor or somebody totally different.
The point which I want to make here is that we need to find what we are good at and match it with a job profile or career. Unlike a few years back, today we come across many courses and degrees offered by training institutes all over India which can help us make the right career choice. So a student with flair for writing can be a blogger or content writer on the subject of his choice. If you love eating, be a food writer. If you love plants start a nursery or become a landscape designer. If you love tea, become a professional tea taster.
Whatever your liking, start searching a career that matches your passion or liking. Take the help of internet, read books, read newspapers, you will get a wealth of information. I know
you may have questions. Will my liking help me earn well? What is the guarantee that I will be successful? Well, first let me tell you what I have heard my parents and elders tell. They believe A) nothing in life comes easy. Hard work, discipline and maintaining good relations with people around is very important. Even a stand up comedian needs to work hard and be disciplined in his practice to make people laugh. B) Concentrate on giving your best in whatever you do, fame and fortune will automatically follow and C) No education goes waste
Finally I would like to end by saying that your dream career or job should be one you would love doing every day and find great satisfaction in it. We may come across our dream career either early or late but we need to start searching for it. Each one of us has talent, likings and skills we are born with. We should try and find that hidden liking or talent. That I think is real education. Finding what we are good at and using it for the good of society and ourselves.

India of Gandhiji's dream

New Doc 70_1Rhea Ramchandran our ex-student from the 2016-17 batch is an excellent orator. She bagged the 3rd prize in Intercollege elocution competition organised by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi at Mani Bhavan. Here is a transcription of the speech:

Good Morning My name is Rhea Ramchandran and my topic is ‘India of Gandhiji's dream’.

Let me begin with Gandhiji's favourite song- Raghupati Raghav Rajaram, Pati te Pawan Sitaram, Ishwar Allah tere naam, sabse sanmati de bhagwan. My dear friends, you must have heard about the story of Gandhiji in South Africa when he was thrown out of the train alongwith his luggage just because he was dark skinned. He fell on the platform. He sat there for hours and thought, “Why did this happen to me? I bought a first class ticket. Why was I thrown out of the train?” It was at that moment that he identified himself with the larger predicament of the people. His focus shifted from‘What about me’ to ‘What can I do for the people around me.’

The India of Gandhiji's dream would be self sufficient and free from poverty.Gandhiji had devised the program of spinning on the charkha and village industry to address the problems of India. Now we have the ‘Make In India Campaign’ which has been initiated to generate employment opportunities for the youth and make India self reliant.

Women Empowerment would be one of Gandhiji's dream. Today Indian women are forerunners in every field. Indian women who are known globally are Indira Nooyi, Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and Sudha Murthy to name a few. Nirmala Sitaraman's elevation as a defence minister is seen as a big boost to women empowerment in the country.

Gandhiji moved millions of people just like that. Not only in India but anywhere in the world, when you take the name of the Mahatma, there is a sense of respect. Let us accept that there were more intelligent, more talented, better orators and even better educated people, but this man with his disarming smile stood above them all, simply because of his commitment. That would be Gandhiji's dream too -that the people of India be committed. Whatever happens your commitment must not change. When you are truly committed you express yourself totally, but when commitment is lacking somewhere you lose your purpose and when the purpose of why we are here is lost, there is no question of fulfilling your goals.

Gandhiji's dream for India would be that no child be forced to study but should find the inclination to do so. A video which went viral recently showed a girl of about 3 years being taught to recite numbers from 1 to 5. The poor girl was unable to recall it correctly even after several attempts. She begged for mercy but her mom slapped her across her face. This video was slammed on the media and rightly so. Parents need to affirm to their children that they can do whatever they want in their life but to do it to the best of their ability and to always remember that their parents will stand by their decision.

In today's scenario, an eye for an eye is no solution as it only aggravates the situation. Gandhiji's dream for peaceful co-existence, economic independence, respect for women, basic education for all and universal brotherhood holds good even today. He was not only a great leader of the past era but also a leader of the times ahead. No leader, either today or in the future, can match him in charisma, caliber and wisdom.

Let me now recite a poem for all of you.

Mahatma the enlightened one.

Won a war without sword or gun.

Born in Saurashtra, a small coastal town,

Which because of him, achieved world renown.

Ahimsa he followed, and headed a bloodless revolution.

Without him India, we could not call Our nation.

Bapu, I dream a dream, will my dream come true?

Will you be born again, My country needs you.

Dear friends, I firmly believe that India is on the threshold of international greatness and we the youth have a major role to play.

Let me end with a quote-If not you then who and if not now then when. So let us take a pledge here and now to build an amazing and incredible India of Gandhiji's dream.

Jaihind
